T&D Department's Wolfson Foundation Grant Award

St. Benedict’s College Technology and Design department are delighted to share with you that they have been awarded a grant of £49,900 by the Wolfson Foundation.

The Wolfson Foundation is an independent charity with a focus on research and education. Its aim is to support civil society by investing in excellent projects in science, health, heritage, humanities and the arts.

Since it was established in 1955, some £1 billion (£2 billion in real terms) has been awarded to more than 14,000 projects throughout the UK, all on the basis of expert review.

The funding has been used to purchase and update machinery in our workshop.

By replacing and updating our Technology and Design facilities we hope to improve the quality of our facilities for practical learning and expand our department’s extra- curricular and outreach offer.

The new machinery will modernise and raise the standard of our school workshop. It will allow for high quality teaching and learning in a specialised environment. GCSE students will be able to deepen their knowledge and engagement in practical learning by using a range of specialised machinery in preparation for moving into further education or an apprenticeship.

In addition, we will be able to offer a collaborative learning space between Technology and Design and Art. Together we will offer an improved extracurricular and enrichment program to our students to promote greater engagement. We will further develop our outreach programs which target local Primary Schools and the community. This will provide primary school students with a flavour of the Technology and Design curriculum and offer learning experiences that they don’t get in Primary School.

We are pleased to also be able to offer students opportunities to further develop their skills by running workshops afterschool on a weekly basis allowing GCSE pupils opportunities to develop their confidence and workshop skills to continue their studies in this field. This will help the department in its drive for continued improvement and excellence for all.

Miss Hutchinson and Miss Shine are excited to begin the new academic year with a fully functional workshop and a collaborative workspace with top of the range equipment.

We are indebted to the Wolfson Foundation.
